The study by Krumpen et al. (2026), published in Nature, shows that the climate-driven increase in icebergs from Greenland and Russia is altering the Arctic Ocean through an increased influx of dropstones (rock debris). These melting processes create new hard-bottom habitats that significantly increase deep-sea biodiversity, but also pose risks to shipping.
